The Gold Monster really is the Minelab Gold Monster 1000 is fun and capable little machine. While the Monster was purchased for my better half I have been enjoying helping her dial it in. Seeing that we travel frequently we have used the Monster in a variety of found conditions. The thoughts expressed here are my initial observations. Notwithstanding my opinion may change with time.

Hot Ground

To illustrate a point I’ve read about how the Monster handles hot ground well. To clarify let me say this, it does handle most mineralized ground well. My friends and I know of a few areas that are simply too hot for any detector. As a matter of fact my friends and I have swung many detectors models over this ground. The list of detectors includes the every PI made from the SD 2100 to the 7000, SDC, TDI, etc. Because some areas are simply extremely hot ground a full ground balance is nearly impossible. The 24 bit processor is clearly an advantage here over older technologies.

Gold Bug 2 Sensitivity compared to the Gold Monster 1000

The big question people have centers around sensitivity. Due to the fact that people have different experiences they also have different opinions. My experience is that the Fisher Gold Bug 2 is more sensitive than the Minelab Gold Monster. Chiefly the advantage in sensitivity is because the Gold Bug operates at a higher kHZ. In like manner the Gold Monster has better ground balance. Better ground balance thus equates to a higher chance of finding gold.

Falsing Coils and Problems

In light of the fact that many people have stated that they experienced falsing from the 5 inch coil that has not been my experience. It must be remembered to keep your coil wire well wrapped around the shaft of any detector. It’s important to realize that the Monster comes with two coils. Additionally one coil is a 10″x6″ “elliptical” and the other is a 5 inch round coil. Both coils are DD (double D coils).

The lack of a constant threshold is a real advantage to many detectorist. For us it took a while to become used to this feature. For the purpose of peace of mind we frequently would ask ourselves one question. “Is this thing working?” I’ve really come to like this feature on the Monster.

Run All Day

You can run the Gold Monster 1000 all day with either the stock battery or the AA battery pack.

Final Thoughts

The Monster is a very capable and affordable gold detector. I really like this machine. The Monster is a fun and capable unit that is also lightweight and ergonomic.
